Counseling With A Licensed Professional Counselor Intern:

What Does That Mean?

Texas Licensed Professional Counselor Interns, like fully licensed counselors, have completed a graduate program in counseling along with a 300 hour practicum (Texas Administrative Code, Title 22, Part 30, Chapter 681, Subchapter E, Rule 681.82). Unlike fully licensed counselors, interns are still under supervision and hold a temporary license (Texas Administrative Code, Title 22, Part 30, Chapter 681, Subchapter F, Rule 681.91). This means that during a 3000 hour internship they meet with a board approved supervisor (Texas Administrative Code, Title 22, Part 30, Chapter 681, Subchapter F, Rule 681.93) once a week for case reviews. During supervision the intern presents questions and concerns they may have about how to further assist their clients therapeutically (Texas Administrative Code, Title 22, Part 30, Chapter 681, Subchapter F, Rule 681,92). Although this requirement is only for interns, many fully licensed counselors will continue the process of consulting with other counselors because it is a beneficial process to continued counselor growth and development.
